We must spend now, says Gallas

William Gallas has challenged Arsenal to step up their player recruitment drive or risk losing him. And the France defender claims he is not the only player dissatisfied the perceived lack of ambition at the Emirates.

Speaking after the capture of Eduardo da Silva from Dinamo Zagreb for an initial £8million, Gallas said: "Several players are questioning the club's future. Around us, all the teams are recruiting but what is planned to compensate for the departure of Thierry Henry to Barcelona?

"I am not at Arsenal to play for third place. It is necessary to recruit players of reputation."

Gallas revealed he will be seeking assurances from Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board over the club's title ambitions this week.

To add to Arsenal fans' worries, new Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster says he sees Cesc Fabregas as the man to take the Spanish champions forward.

After being unveiled at the Bernabeu, Schuster said Spain's Fabregas, 20, is one of his favourite players. The former West Germany midfielder added: "He has improved a lot in England and learned a lot from Wenger.

"He is one of the few in his position who can carry a team on his back — and when I say teams, I mean quality teams."

Arsenal, having sold Henry, are unlikely to be receptive to any offer for their other jewel, who signed an eight-year contract just last summer and recently insisted: "I'm staying in London."
