But reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton and his likely successor, Jenson Button, are still not guaranteed a place on the starting grid next year.

The FIA highlighted five teams — McLaren, who run Hamilton; Brawn GP, with whom Button has won six of this season's seven races; BMW-Sauber, Renault and Toyota — as having submitted conditional entries and have "invited" them to lift those conditions by next Friday night.

Ferrari, Red Bull and Toro Rosso appear on the list as unconditional entries but all three immediately issued statements saying they would not race unless FIA president Max Mosley dropped his controversial plans for a budget cap.

And a letter released by the teams this afternoon, signed by Brawn, BMW, Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Renault, Torro Rosso and Toyota, appealed to the FIA senate and the World Motorsport Council members to intervene and solve a problem that is now a serious threat to the future of F1.
