We'll go for the win in Russia

Steve McClaren watched his resurgent England side overcome poor Estonian opposition yesterday and then urged them to get the job done by beating Russia in a potentially epic European Championship qualifier in Moscow on Wednesday.

Victory at Wembley yesterday — England's fifth 3-0 win in a row — means that another three points against Russia will guarantee a place in next summer's Euro 2008 finals.

Head coach McClaren, buoyant again after being under so much pressure following a poor start to the qualifying campaign, said: "Whoever we put out there and whatever tactics we use, this is a great opportunity to go out to Moscow, win the game and qualify. We've won our last five games 3-0 and we beat Russia 3-0 at Wembley. There is a lot of confidence and belief in this team at the moment. We'll be going to Russia to win, that's for sure."

It was an encouraging day for England, and for Wayne Rooney, who scored his first competitive goal for his country in more than three years. "I'd forgotten how to celebrate," he joked afterwards.

Shaun Wright-Phillips opened England's account and an own goal by Taavi Rahn sealed Estonia's fate inside 33 minutes.

The only disappointment for McClaren was yet more jeering for Frank Lampard. The Chelsea midfielder, who appeared as a substitute, was left in no doubt that sections of the England support have still not forgiven him for a poor World Cup 15 months ago.

"It's disappointing. Nobody likes that," said McClaren. "In the last three games he has played for us, Frank has been one of our best players. But he just has to deal with it."

McClaren wants England to repeat the ruthlessness that saw them beat Guus Hiddink's Russia side at Wembley last month but they are likely to be without Ashley Cole, who damaged an ankle in blocking a shot yesterday.

The Chelsea left-back had a scan last night and McClaren admitted: "It's not looking good."

Better news for England is that captain John Terry, who missed yesterday's game with a knee injury, could recover in time to face Russia.

"He's looking better," said McClaren. "It's a lot more positive than it was last Thursday. We are hoping he can heal so that, come Monday, he can train."

McClaren insists that the artificial pitch in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium will not take England by surprise. They are due to train on a similar surface in Altrincham tomorrow.

"We have done our research," he said. "Over 100 matches, there is no significant difference between the two surfaces. But we have to cope with it whatever."

Estonia coach Viggo Jensen warned that the artificial surface could trouble England.

"I think the pitch will be the biggest problem for them and it will be difficult," he said. "But I still expect England and Croatia to qualify."
