Welsh boss Toshack fears for Cardiff star Ramsey over move to United

Wales manager John Toshack has warned teenage star Aaron Ramsey to be wary of a big-money move to a Barclays Premier League club.

Wales fly out to Iceland for Wednesday's friendly in Reykjavik tomorrow, and then face a daunting task in Rotterdam on Sunday against a Holland side playing their last warm-up match ahead of Euro 2008.

And having played in the FA Cup final earlier in the month, 17-year-old midfielder Ramsey is expected to make a move to the top flight, with Manchester United top of the list of suitors.

It is believed further negotiations took place in Moscow last week ahead of the Champions League final, with the prospect of a season-long loan back to Cardiff for the youngster.

And Toshack admitted to concerns about young players moving to the Premier League and then finding themselves missing regular football.

Of Ramsey, Toshack said: "A lot of people are making a lot of fuss about Aaron. But he is still very young and has not started too many games at Cardiff, he is not in their first-choice line-up.

"He has still got quite some way to go. He has played a few times for our under-21s, but we need to get to know him a bit more. A week away with us will be positive for him. There's been a lot of talk about Ramsey moving on, but as far as I know there is nothing concrete yet.

"We have had examples in our squad of young lads who have got into our side and set new records as Wales internationals, and then got themselves big-money moves to Premier League clubs.

"The likes of David Cotterill, Lewin Nyatanga, Gareth Bale and Chris Gunter have all gone into Premier League clubs very young. But it has not always helped us. Cotterill barely got a game at Wigan, Gunter has been outstanding for us but has moved to Spurs and is not getting the amount of football we had hoped he would.

"But if Ramsey does get a move to a higher division, however good he is, it is in our interests that he goes out on loan so he can play regularly. If not then a step up becomes difficult for youngsters."

Toshack has been hit by three more withdrawals due to injury - Cotterill, Craig Davies and Brian Stock - but he is boosted by the return of West Ham striker Craig Bellamy.

The Cardiff-born forward has not played for the Hammers since a substitute appearance at Wigan in February. But in effect, he has been out since October.

Toshack said: "Obviously Craig's fitness is nowhere near what it should be. But it seems that he has got over his problems and he has been training a lot and doing well.

"But as for starting a game, that is something we will have to discuss with him. He has been missing for several months. The Welsh lads at West Ham have not had a good time of it.

"The three of them, Danny Gabbidon, James Collins and Bellamy, have had five groin operations between them, two each for Danny and Craig. We did not expect Craig to be out for this long. He had his best-ever game for Wales in Slovakia before he went in for the operation, and we did not expect it to be this long out."

He continued: "But he is here, he is training well with us and also training at Cardiff before the cup final. That is far better than working on your own. Whether he starts, I don't know. We are not expecting 90 minutes out of of him, that's for sure.

"He has been so unfortunate with injuries. If you look back over the years at the amount of football he has been forced to miss, he has been a very unlucky boy.

"We have to be very careful that nothing happens over this week that will damage his recovery.

"The important thing is that he gets a good rest over the summer and then is ready for our important matches in the World Cup next season, but then West Ham want him back for them as well."
