Wenger gunning for Zenit's £10m Russian schemer Arshavin

Andrei Arshavin is a £10m target for Arsenal after the Russian playmaker starred in his side's 2-0 win over Sweden.

The 27-year-old scored one and was involved in the other as he inspired Guus Hiddink's side to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

Wenger has had a meeting with Dick Advocaat, coach of Zenit St Petersburg, to express the Gunners' interest.

Wenger guns for £10m Arshavin

Arshavin, who was part of Zenit's UEFA Cup winning side last season, is understood to have a fixed-price release clause in his contract and earns around £50,000-a-week at the Russian club.

Several top European clubs could challenge the Gunners for his signature but Wenger is in pole position having already made contact prior to last night's superb display.

Arshavin had been suspended for Russia's first two matches in Group D but returned in triumphant fashion last night to earn high praise from his international boss.

'Arshavin is a player who can decide very fast where he can create danger - he's a smart player,' said Hiddink.

The Dutchman is now set to face Holland on Saturday in Russia's first knockout match at a major tournament since the break up of the old Soviet Union more than 15 years ago.

'We play with the concepts that football should be played, like Holland,' added Hiddink.
