In talks: Arsene Wenger is continuing discussions with the Arsenal board over his new contract at the Emirates
Wenger is expected to sit down with the Arsenal board next week to finalise his contract extension and bring an end to the uncertainty that has surrounded his position at Emirates Stadium since David Dein left in April.
The club have scheduled a press conference for Thursday to unveil their chosen charity for this season and this could provide the pefect opportunity to announce Wenger's new deal.
He has been offered a £4million-a-year, three-year extension but the Frenchman could settle for a one-year rolling contract, similar to Sir Alex Ferguson's at Manchester United.
Initial talks have progressed smoothly and Wenger wants to clarify his position to make sure it doesn't distract from the team's focus.
Wenger is currently concentrating on maintaining Arsenal's promising start to the season against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Sunday. Despite the two victories over Fulham and Sparta Prague, the Gunners boss is looking to reinforce his squad before the end of the transfer window.
Dinamo Zagreb playmaker Luka Modric and Chelsea midfielder Lassana Diarra are the two most likely additions, although both deals are a long way from being completed.
Arsenal will be without midfielder Tomas Rosicky (knee) and wing-back Emmanuel Eboue (ankle) for the trip to Blackburn.
Eduardo da Silva could make his debut following a minor ankle problem, but is unlikely to start.
Midfielder Denilson is also back in the squad after a similar injury. Abou Diaby (ankle) and striker Emmanuel Adebayor (groin) are still out, along with veteran midfielder Gilberto, after his summer of international duty with Brazil.
Wenger added: "Blackburn are a committed side and it's a good opportunity for us to show we can deal with that."
Meanwhile, Robin van Persie was recalled to the Dutch squad named today by coach Marco van Basten for a friendly against Switzerland on Wednesday.
Blackburn boss Mark Hughes believes his team can build on last Saturday's 2-1 win at Middlesbrough.
He said: " It will certainly be a big test. Arsenal are an outstanding team and club. We have had some great games against them in recent times — and none more so than the FA Cup quarter final [Rovers won 1-0] last season.
"There is always an incident, there is always something happening, and there is always good quality football on show. So we are really looking forward to it."
Hughes is worried about the fitness of South African forward Benni McCarthy, who is recovering from a concussion sustained during training.
