Wenger will settle for second best this season

Arsene Wenger has urged his Arsenal players to prove their mental strength by snatching the Premier League runners-up spot.

The Gunners saw their faint title hopes snuffed out after defeat at Manchester United last week and are now seven points behind second-placed Chelsea, with a game in hand.

The Frenchman wants his side to produce a perfect end to the campaign and overhaul the Blues.

He said: "The Manchester United game will never go out of my system, but we want to focus forwards and what is in front of us. Now is a good opportunity for us to show mental strength and to finish as high as we can because second place is still possible.

"Overall, I believe we have made big progress this season. We were very close to the two trophies which really matter to us and we want to go into the next season feeling we have moved forward."

Meanwhile, Manuel Almunia is set to pile more misery on Jens Lehmann after making quick progress in his recovery from a wrist injury.

The Spanish goalkeeper was forced out of last week's trip to Old Trafford, with Lehmann being handed a rare start, but he will be restored to the starting line-up if he passes a fitness test today.

Wenger added: "Maybe Manuel Almunia will be available. I'll decide today. He got injured in training on the Friday before the United game. We sent him for a scan and there was inflammation so he could not play."

Wenger is still without his long-term absentees Bacary Sagna (ankle), Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) and Mathieu Flamini (knee) for the clash with Reading.
