Wenger will sign new Arsenal contract this month

Arsene Wenger will sign a new Arsenal contract 'before the end of August' to end the continuing speculation about his future.

He admits the talk could have become damaging to Arsenal's chances this season by giving players an excuse not to perform.

Wenger entered the last year of his deal this summer and, with the departure of ally David Dein from the board, along with talk of a takeover, he has been delaying agreeing a new one. He has also wanted reassurance that the team he has been building will be capable of winning trophies.

Now he says he is satisfied there is stability within the club and that his squad can compete. He expects to end the uncertainty and sign the deal once lawyers involved return from holiday.

Wenger said: 'It is just the speed of negotiations. There are always two parties and it takes time. Maybe the other lawyer is on holiday. But one more week is not a big issue.

'There is a need to do it before the end of August because I don't want this to be a handicap to the success of the team. I don't want my players to find this kind of excuse. 'I have a responsibility to the fans, the players, the club.'

Though the details of the contract are still being fine-tuned, it is thought Wenger will be offered a three-year deal worth £3 m a season, with a getout clause for him at the end of each year.
