Wenger's £4.5m deal matches Fergie wage

Arsene Wenger's new contract with Arsenal is worth a staggering £4.5million a year. The Arsenal manager, who will today announce the extension to the end of the 2010-11 season, has been given parity with Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, it still puts him well behind Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's £6.5m a year. Wenger's previous deal was worth £4m a year plus bonuses, but he has become the highest-paid member of the current staff.

Thierry Henry's £130,000-a-week deal remains the highest in the club's history, but Wenger's works out at almost £90,000 a week.

The manager is expected to speak to Cesc Fabregas when the player returns from international duty after the Spain midfielder admitted holding talks with Real Madrid in the summer.

Wenger threatened to sue Real if Fabregas admitted he had spoken to the Spanish champions. Fabregas did just that on Radio Marca yesterday.

He said: "The president, Ramon Calderon, and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic have spoken to me, but I decided to follow on with my commitment to Arsenal."

Across North London, Spurs boss Martin Jol says he would continue going to White Hart Lane even if he was sacked.

Jol said: "I told the chairman that if I'm not sitting in the dug-out I will be sitting in the stands as a fan. He won't get rid of me that easily."
