Wenger's keeping Gunners guessing

Arsene Wenger failed to ease the fears of Arsenal fans last night after describing the shock departure of David Dein as 'a sad day' for the club and only committing himself until the end of his current contract in 14 months.

Wenger attended a board meeting at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday, arriving at 3pm and leaving 80 minutes later.

In a statement that was issued afterwards, he said: "It is a sad day for Arsenal Football Club. It is a huge disappointment because we worked very closely together.

"David has contributed highly to the success of the club in the last 10 years and even before that as well. Red and white are the colours of his heart."

Wenger, however, knows Dein was ousted by the surviving members of the board because of a split over the possible takeover by American billionaire Stanley Kroenke and Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood launched a bitter broadside at foreign owners raiding the Premiership.

Hill-Wood said: "Americans are buying up chunks of Premiership football clubs and not because of their love for football but because they see an opportunity to make money.

"They know absolutely sweet FA about our football and we don't want these type of people involved.

"Why don't we want the American at our club? Call me old fashioned, but we don't need his money and we don't want his sort. Our objective is to keep Arsenal English - albeit with a lot of foreign players.

"If Kroenke mounts a hostile takeover we shall resist it with all our might."

Earlier, Wenger, who has been promised "someone to co-ordinate transfers" expressed some support for those who remain in charge.

"My position is that I am linked with the club very strongly," he said. "The relationship with the rest (of the board) has always been very good and we try always to have a good understanding."

Hill-Wood will offer Wenger a new contract although there are no plans to discuss a deal as yet.

"It's well known that Arsene and David have got on very well over the past 10 years and I am certain that Arsene will miss him," he said. "However, I believe the relationship that Arsene has with the rest of the board is good.

"He is on contract with us until 2008 and we very much hope that he will extend it beyond that."
