The Germany goalkeeper thanked Wenger for permitting him a tearful farewell to the fans for the final 20 minutes in the 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday but criticised the Frenchman for trying to win trophies with kids this season.

Saying goodbye: Lehmann waves his farewell to the Emirates crowd

"It is nice to watch but it is not ideal because we are not winning anything," he said. "Something is wrong. The way we tried to do it with just young players playing beautiful football did not work.

"If we don't win things it is either my fault for not playing well enough or you have to ask yourself other questions."

Earlier, Lehmann had said that he was touched by the fans' reaction as he said goodbye.

"It was quite emotional and I had one or two tears in my eyes, as it was a great farewell for me."

Meanwhile, Arsenal's ladies team yesterday added the FA Cup to their League title, beating Leeds 4-1 at the City Ground in Nottingham.
