Wenger's touchline excuses won't wash with UEFA chiefs

Arsene Wenger could be sizing up a laundry basket for himself after UEFA promised to investigate his sending-off in Sevilla and his refusal to retire to the stands.

An automatic one-match ban rulesWenger out of Arsenal's final group game at home to Steaua Bucharest on December 12, stopping him talking to players immediately before or during the game and denying him access to the dressing room, tunnel and touchline areas.

Point made: Wenger is sent to the stands

A day after the Steaua game UEFA's disciplinary chiefs will meet to consider whether to extend his ban as punishment for his continued dispute with fourth official Reinold Wiedemeijer and his refusal to leave the pitch side.

After the 3-1 defeat in Sevilla the Gunners are now likely to qualify in second place and face a group winner in the last 16, possibly with their manager banned.

Wenger claimed there was no way to climb past Sevilla fans to the directors' box but that will not be accepted as an excuse when he could have gone down the tunnel.

Ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho received a two-game ban in 2005 and missed both legs of his side's Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.

There were allegations that Mourinho was smuggled into the dressing room inside a laundry skip ahead of the second leg.

UEFA's director of communications William Gaillard said: "The case concerning Arsene Wenger will be looked at again but the rules are quite clear on this."
