We're hoping Wales go for Peel, admits Fiji captain

Fiji will be mightily relieved if, as expected, Wales coach Gareth Jenkins recalls Dwayne Peel for Saturday's make-or-break Pool B match between the countries in Nantes.

The South Sea islanders regard Mike Phillips as the greater potential threat at scrum half, especially in light of his man-of-the-match performance against Japan at the Millennium Stadium last Thursday.

Peel is likely to get the nod over Phillips

The Ospreys No 9 scored one try and created another with an audacious act of individual flair, triggering a fresh debate about who should be first choice behind the scrum.

But Peel — a Test Lion in New Zealand two years ago — apparently has the backing of Jenkins, which suits Wales' next opponents.

Fiji captain and scrum half Mosese Rauluni said: 'I actually think Mike Phillips is more threatening. He takes it to the line, he's so big and so strong, he really puts pressure on defences.

'The game he played against Japan was one of the best I've seen from a half back. He was chipping and chasing. He played well.

'Peel is experienced. It's going to be a tough decision, but if they want to go for a man who is going to threaten the line then Phillips is the man.'

Asked if he was indulging in some amateur psychology, the Saracens scrum half added: 'No. whoever plays is going to be a tough opponent. Anyway, we have to win our set-piece before we worry about Peel or Phillips.'

Although the Fiji side who went down 55-12 against Australia on Sunday contained a number of back-up players, Rauluni is rightly concerned about the basics of their game.

The islanders won only 50 per cent of their own lineout ball and conceded three first-half penalties for taking too long over throwing in. The scrum fared little better.

'Against Australia we lost our ball at the lineout and got pushed off our scrum,' he said. 'Hopefully we'll put it right for Wales because we're both playing for a quarter-final place. It's a knockout.'

Wales captain Gareth Thomas returned to contact training on Monday after recovering from a rib injury and is more likely to be available than Sonny Parker (groin) and Adam Jones (foot). Jenkins will announce his team on Wednesday.
