West Brom play tough over Davies as injuries bite at Spurs

West Brom are willing to use the injury problems at Tottenham to up the price they're asking for centre half Curtis Davies.

The Baggies are holding out for £10million for the England Under-21 defender, who also interests Aston Villa.

Spurs need reinforcements at the back after discovering Younes Kaboul will join Ledley King on the sidelines for up to a month after limping out of Tuesday's horror show against Everton with a hamstring strain.

Davies is keen to leave The Hawthorns and fancies his chances of breaking in Martin Jol's plans at White Hart Lane on a regular basis.

But West Brom boss Tony Mowbray said: "There have been conversations with Curtis but the situation hasn't changed.

"The chairman has stated that until an offer comes in that is acceptable to our football club then we get on with it.

"Curtis is finding it difficult at the moment to get himself in the right frame of mind to play for our football club but if the right offer doesn't come in then I would suggest that will need to change come September 1."

Mowbray suggested that Davies, who has been left out of his side so far this season, could be thrown a lifeline when he added: "I think a precedent has been set because we had it with Nathan Ellington in the last window and it's something I've dealt with since I came to this football club.

He told the Birmingham Mail: "I've had a few players who, for whatever reason, didn't want to play for our football club but I'm a pretty compassionate manager and if they don't want to play they don't play.

"If they run out of options they can either sit and wallow in the reserves, train alone and never play or they can roll their sleeves up, come up to me and say 'I'm ready to play'.

"It's the changing face of football and wouldn't have happened five years ago, let alone ten or 15 years ago. Football clubs had players under an iron rod back then and the game is changing very rapidly. Players and their advisors... well, what is a contract these days?"
