West Ham star Bellamy hoping the next years will be the highlight of his career

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley could have a potentially explosive pairing in attack next season if Craig Bellamy is kept fit to partner Dean Ashton - and the Welshman is adamant he is not going to return just to make up the numbers.

The striker is on the comeback trail after a succession of injury problems this season and was hoping to feature for Wales against Iceland tonight.

But disappointingly for Welsh boss John Toshack the 28-year-old is not fit enough to reclaim his captain's role.

Bellamy, who continued his rehabilitation after the end of the Premier League season with Championship side Cardiff, said "It has been disappointing but I will look back hopefully in the next few years and say I have had three or four of the best years of my career.

"I am not coming back just to hopefully be good at this level," he continued on whufc.com.

"I want the next couple of years to be the highlight of my career and to do that I have got to work so hard."
