West Indies duo hold off Aussie snarlers to salvage Second Test draw in Antigua

Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul produced a brilliant backs-to-the-wall performance to rescue a draw for the West Indies in the second Test against Australia in Antigua.

The pair put on a 143 for the fourth wicket, in a partnership which lasted into the final session as the Windies closed on 266 for five, chasing 372 for victory.

The innings was more about dogged determination than attacking flair, as the hosts frustrated the Australian attack.

Captain Sarwan was finally dismissed by Mitchell Johnson for a magnificent 128.

Brett Lee struck soon afterwards to see off Dwayne Bravo for just one - his third wicket of the innings - but Chanderpaul stuck it out until the end, finishing unbeaten on 77.

The draw saw Australia retain the the Frank Worrell Trophy. But the final day was a victory for the fighting spirit of Sarwan and Chanderpaul, whose partnership lasted more than 50 overs and ensures there is plenty to play for in the final Test in Barbados - with the tourists leading 1-0. From 84 for three, Sarwan and Chanderpaul dug in - after Brett Lee had claimed two wickets before lunch.

Australia declared on their overnight total of 244 for six, and it did not take long for them to strike in the morning session. Lee saw off Devon Smith for a duck, and the Windies were soon minus their other opener too when Xavier Marshall nicked a Stuart Clark delivery behind to Brad Haddin to make it 19 for two.

Lee then had Runako Morton lbw with an inswinger - only for Sarwan and Chanderpaul to then keep Australia at bay till after tea.

It was not until Ricky Ponting took the new ball that Johnson made the breakthrough when Sarwan was undone by extra bounce to be caught at gully by Mike Hussey - ending a 241-ball stay. After Bravo had gone cheaply, Denesh Ramdin helped Chanderpaul close out the match.
