Westwood ton puts Sussex on the back foot

Ian Westwood struck a century as Warwickshire enjoyed a strong day on the field in their LV County Championship clash with Division One leaders Sussex at Hove.

Westwood's 110, combined with half-centuries from captain Darren Maddy (53), Kumar Sangakkara (59) and Tim Ambrose (52 not out), put the Bears on top at 349 for six at the end of the first day.

Off the field it was a different story, however, as the two counties clashed over two spinners behind the scenes.

The toss was delayed due to a row over the eligibility of new Warwickshire signing Nayan Doshi, whom it was eventually ruled could not play after his switch from Surrey was not ratified.

Sussex also confirmed they had received an official approach from Warwickshire to speak to leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, which was not immediately granted.

Mushtaq took two wickets today with his fellow former Pakistan international Saqlain Mushtaq claiming four for 73.

Harbhajan Singh, overlooked by India this summer, took five for 35 for Surrey as Kent were skittled for just 150 on the first day at Canterbury.

Skipper Rob Key carried his bat for an unbeaten 75 but only four other players made double figures and four were dismissed for ducks.

At the close, Surrey were well in control at 148 for four in reply with Mark Ramprakash 57no after 57 from Scott Newman.

Michael Carberry's 118 and 96 from John Crawley helped Hampshire to 350 for five against bottom side Worcestershire at the Rose Bowl.

Michael Brown weighed in with 73 but Crawley's dismissal at the end of the day gave the visitors hope for tomorrow.

Second-placed Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 350 in their clash with Division Two leaders Somerset at Trent Bridge.

Captain Stephen Fleming hit 145 from 172 balls with 19 fours and three sixes but former England paceman Andrew Caddick's four for 69 saw Somerset hit back.

Marcus Trescothick was unbeaten on 43 as Somerset closed on 83 for one in reply.

Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria took three for 38 from 21 overs as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 278 at Southend.

Ravi Bopara also took three wickets after top scorer Craig Spearman (75) had put on 114 for the first wicket with Kadeer Ali (65).

Jon Lewis took two wickets as Gloucestershire struck back to reduce Essex to 36 for three before the close. Glamorgan closed on 294 for seven against Northamptonshire at Colwyn Bay.

Captain David Hemp (82) and Richard Grand (79) put on 155 for the fourth wicket.
