What a Storey: Husband and wife claim historic golds on same day in Beijing

Sarah and Barney Storey had something in common at the Paralympics Games on Wednesday.

The husband and wife each won a gold medal in the Velodrome.

The unusual occurence of two golds for the same family in different events on the same day happened when Sarah set a world record in the individual pursuit and Barney emulated her success as pilot to blind rider Anthony Kappes in the tandem sprint.

Mrs Storey's performance perfectly illustrated how close Britain's Paralympic cyclists are coming to their able-bodied Olympic team-mates.

Her time of 3min 36.367sec was just eight seconds slower than Rebecca Romero's winning Olympic time and would have placed her eighth in that competition.

'The fact that a Paralympian can finish in that sort of time and sort of position is amazing,' said Mrs Storey. 'I can't actually remember much about the race except my legs were hurting.'

She has something else in common with  Romero, a former Olympic rowing silver medallist who turned to cycling.. She switched to cycling after winning five Paralympic golds as a swimmer at four previous Games.

Wtih the pursuit team of Jody Cundy, Mark Birswtow and Darren Kenny also winning yesterday, Britain's cyclists finished with 12 golds, more than half the 21 on offer in the track cycling.

They move now onto the road where their three-day campaign begins on Friday.

Britain's team had won 21 gold medals in the first four days of the 11-day Games, second only to hosts China with 24.

Meanwhile a German wheelchair basketball player Ahmet Coskun was sent home from the Games after failing a pre-games doping test.

German officials said Coskun's urine test on August 23 showed the presence of the banned substance Finasteride.

The substance is used as a treatment for baldness, but also can mask the use of steroids.
