What now for the Newcastle backroom boys?

The mess left by Sam Allardyce includes a huge backroom staff, all salaried. Nigel Pearson, as assistant manager, has outlived the reigns of Allardyce and Glenn Roeder.

He could survive again under Harry Redknapp, who has a history of using English coaches.

The same could be said of Steve Round, the former England coach.

But Allardyce brought a large cast of specialists, who are all likely to go — Mark Taylor, head of science; Mark Howard, the conditioning coach; Dave Fallows, the ProZone analysis expert, and Dr Mark Nesti, the psychological consultant. His team of scouts must sit the most uncomfortably. Allardyce inherited and kept others.

It is believed about 30 were working for Newcastle when Allardyce arrived.

His scouting team included Chris McMenemy, Adrian Heath, Bobby Saxton, Paul Montgomery and Rick Hixlon.

Terry McDermott has been a survivor as a coach. Joe Joyce (head of academy) and David Mills (head of scouting) have done the same. Goalkeeping coach Paul Barron's position is also in doubt.
