Fabio Capello proved himself the perfect man to guide England out of the wilderness when he ignored the clamour to reward David Beckham with his 100th cap and instead dropped him from the squad on Thursday.
Capello has not dismissed the possibility of recalling the former England captain when the new MLS season has started and he is once again playing for Los Angeles Galaxy.
DAILY MIRROR
David Beckham has vowed to fight his way back into the England squad and cement his reputation as the comeback kid. England boss Fabio Capello phoned him late on Wednesday night and told him - in Spanish - he was not in the squad to face Switzerland next week and his 100th cap must wait.

THE INDEPENDENT
Left out of Fabio Capello's first England squad yesterday and still one short of his 100 caps, David Beckham has told The Independent that he will not give up on his international career.
In an interview with the former England captain, Beckham said he accepted that he would not be an automatic pick for his country but was not considering retiring from international football yet.
THE SUN
Fabio Capello has rammed home the message: This is MY England. The no-nonsense Italian ignored the clamour to give David Beckham a 100th cap by axing him from Wednesday's friendly against Switzerland. Also: Jermain Defoe suffered a humiliating double blow yesterday - as he was dumped by club and country within the space of a few hours.
THE TIMES
David Beckham flew back to Los Angeles yesterday intent on pulling off another comeback after his omission from Fabio Capello's first England squad.
The midfield player will resume training with the Los Angeles Galaxy this morning knowing that he will have to find fresh reserves of defiance, although he has been reassured by the England manager that his dream of reaching 100 caps is still alive.
DAILY TELEGRAPH
The circus has left town, the boot camp has arrived. England's tough new coach, Fabio Capello, last night decreed that his team would not be shaped by celebrity or sentimentality but by those old-school criteria of form, fitness and an individual's suitability to chosen tactics. David Beckham, stranded on 99 caps, has finally become unfashionable.
DAILY STAR
David Beckham last night vowed to win back his England place and earn his 100th cap. The disappointed former England skipper was yesterday left out of Fabio Capello's first ever squad because he is not considered match fit.
Also: Fabio Capello's shock inclusion in his first ever England squad is a self-confessed "pub player".
DAILY EXPRESS
David Beckham is facing up to the harsh reality that his England career is over after being axed by new coach Fabio Capello. Former skipper Beckham's dreams of becoming only the fifth player to win 100 England caps appear doomed as he was left out of the Italian's 30-man squad for Wednesday's friendly against Switzerland.
