FIFA's president is so furious with the proposals that he threatened to charge the PL with bringing the game into disrepute, as their scheme rides roughshod over the statutes of the world governing body.

Sepp Blatter last night vowed to wreck England's hopes of hosting the 2018 World Cup unless the Premier League scraps its global games plan. In a stunning public humiliation of Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore, the FIFA president promised to ensure personally the proposal for an "international round" of fixtures is killed off.

The FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, last night delivered a devastating blow to the Premier League's plans for an international round, dismissing the proposals as "an abuse of association football" that could cost England any chance of hosting the 2018 World Cup.

The Premier League's plan to revolutionise the competition by taking 10 extra games a season overseas was in tatters last night after FIFA president Sepp Blatter launched a scathing attack on the proposal. One week on from the announcement by Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore, Blatter condemned the idea saying English football could face charges of bringing the game into disrepute if they pressed ahead with the initiative.

The Premier League's attempts to go global suffered another blow yesterday when Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, launched an outspoken attack on the controversial proposals. In a damning indictment, Benitez dismissed the scheme to create an "international round" of fixtures as little more than a cash cow that would unfairly benefit the big clubs.

Rafa Benitez has shot down Richard Scudamore's claim that all 20 Premier League clubs are behind the 39th game plan. And former England skipper David Beckham has urged the League to consider any possible changes very carefully.

Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane last night delivered a heavyweight message for Spurs in Europe as the north London side won 2-1 at Slavia Prague in their UEFA Cup tie. Berbatov needed only four minutes to score as the Tottenham players - shedding weight after criticisms of being overweight - enjoyed another good night.

Also: The Premier League are on a collision course with FIFA, with their plans for a 39th round of games played overseas now in grave danger of collapse.

THE INDEPENDENT

The Premier League officials working on the controversial "international round" proposal for January 2011 are considering making one of the five host cities a loss-leading goodwill location such as South Africa or India. The city in question would not earn the Premier League anything like the returns of the other four but would instead be regarded as a gesture to show the League's commitment to all its fans.
