What the back pages of the papers say - February 5

DAILY MAIL

Fabio Capello's hard-line England regime began on Monday when he presented his squad with a list of rules.

Also: Manchester United are embroiled in an unseemly row over the Munich memorial service after trying to charge £5,000 for television footage of the event. Giovanni Trapattoni will be offered a £1million bonus for leading the Republic of Ireland to the World Cup finals in South Africa.

THE SUN

Fabio Capello has laid down the law - and left England's stars quaking.

Also: Manchester City have landed Benjani for nearly half the £8million fee they agreed last week. Jonny Wilkinson is in the clear to face Italy on Sunday.

DAILY MIRROR

Fabio Capello began his reign yesterday by treating his England flops to a new hard-line approach - and then promised to turn them into champions.

Also: Rio Ferdinand last night admitted no one feels safe after Fabio Capello's ruthless axing of David Beckham. Sir Alex Ferguson claims he hates subjecting his Manchester United players to his infamous hairdryer treatment - but insists he sometimes has no choice.

DAILY STAR

England stars last night revealed the first details of new boss Fabio Capello's hard-line regime.

Also: Amir Khan is dreaming of a Battle of Britain fight with Ricky Hatton once he has cleaned up his lightweight division.

DAILY EXPRESS

Fabio Capello has already laid down the law to his England players by telling them: "I only want winners."

Also: Steven Gerrard spent his wedding day telling guests just how good he thinks David Bentley is. Steve Finnan is concentrating on Liverpool and the battle for the top four after retiring from international football with the Republic of Ireland at the age of 31.

THE TIMES

As they gave their first impressions of life under Fabio Capello, England's players likened the buzz that the Italian manager's arrival has created to that of the first day at a new school, but their toughest of new taskmasters has left them in no doubt as to what he expects of them. He spelt out that he cannot abide losing and wants to turn England into winners - even if it means "winning ugly".

Also: The delay in appointing a successor to Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has gone on for so long that some players could contemplate retiring from international football, Richard Dunne, the central defender, has said.

DAILY TELEGRAPH

The England camp breathed a sigh of relief last night when news came through that fly-half Jonny Wilkinson had not been cited for the tackle on flanker Jonathan Thomas, who was led from the field dazed and bloodied during Wales' 26-19 victory at Twickenham on Saturday.

Also: Didier Drogba withdrew from all future African awards yesterday with a furious attack on the Confederation Africaine de Football.

THE INDEPENDENT

Fabio Capello laid down the law to his England players at their first meeting on Sunday night and immediately ended the circus around the team hotel by banning the players from inviting visitors there during international duty.

THE GUARDIAN

The Fabio Capello effect has kicked in. England's players trotted out last night on to the turf at Wembley where they had been humbled and humiliated by Croatia barely three months ago but, even if the nightmarish memory of that November night still sends shivers down the spine, already the mood is unrecognisable.

Also: Dwain Chambers' solicitor was last night preparing for the eventuality of a high court action against UK Athletics after the national governing body failed to respond to two requests to clarify whether the sprinter can run at the World Indoor Championship trials this weekend.
