THE TIMES

English football is littered with depressing shoot-out defeats for the national team and a new chapter was added at club level last night as Everton and Tottenham Hotspur were eliminated from the UEFA Cup on penalties. On an evening when both clubs deserved credit for clawing back first-leg deficits, neither could keep their nerve at the end to move into the quarter-finals.

THE GUARDIAN

Bookmakers last night predicted that tomorrow's Gold Cup meeting at Cheltenham would be the biggest day ever for horse-race betting, with £300million at stake on a single afternoon, after the cancellation of a day's racing at the Festival meeting for the first time in 30 years. The six races due to be staged yesterday have been added to the cards for today and tomorrow to produce schedules with an unprecedented depth and quality.

Former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira believes Liverpool are the best equipped to win the Champions League this year - and believes his old club are not experienced enough to do so. Vieira was in the Inter Milan side who lost 1-0 to the Reds at the San Siro on Tuesday to go out 3-0 on aggregate.

Also: Tottenham and Everton both crashed out of the UEFA Cup on penalties last night on an evening of high drama.

THE INDEPENDENT

It will not ease the pain inflicted by Barnsley, nor is it likely to buy Avram Grant much time, but there was no disguising Chelsea's desire to make a statement as they slaughtered Derby County at Stamford Bridge last night. The victory brought Chelsea within five points of the Premier League leaders Arsenal, with a game in hand and the Gunners due at Stamford Bridge in 10 days' time.
