Who is Xavier Malisse? - apart from being the man next up for Andy Murray

I know that name. . .

Of course you do. Andy Murray's opponent this afternoon lost to David Nalbandian in the 2002 semi-finals.

He had treatment on court then, didn't he? For a heart scare?

Yes, after being examined by the tournament doctor, the diagnosis was 'palpitations caused by nerves'.

Anyway, he has a bit of a pedigree.

The 27-year-old Belgian is ranked 226 after time out with a wrist injury and needed a wildcard this year. But he has been seeded as high as 14 at Wimbledon and could be better but for a series of injuries during the past few years.

Isn't he a bit of a
hothead?

Think John McEnroe without so much talent. Three years ago he was defaulted during the Nasdaq-100 Open after swearing at a line judge.

Any British connections?

Yes, he defeated Greg Rusedski during his run to the last four, just when the draw seemed to be opening up for the big-serving left-hander. Oh, and he was coached for a time by David Felgate, who was also Tim Henman's mentor.

What did Felgate have to say about his charge?

'Xavier is one of the nicest guys you could ever wish to meet but there is a tendency for the red mist to descend.'

And what has Mr Malisse said about himself?

'I have no friends in tennis' was one of the more interesting comments.

Could be fireworks
against Murray,
then. . .

Prepare for angst, general soul-searching and a few tantrums - and not just from the Scot.
