Why they are in the pink at Lord's

Here's one that will have the traditionalists at Lord's spluttering into their G & Ts — pink balls. The newly developed ball has been designed to last an innings in one-day games because the white one deteriorates, becomes discoloured and always needs replacing.

The pink revolution produced encouraging results in a 50-over Lord's trial between MCC and Scotland.

Out: Scotland's Fraser Watts gets done by the new pink ball

MCC head of cricket John Stephenson said: "We're very encouraged, although a full introduction is some way off. Having bowled with the ball I can say it behaved normally and in terms of durability, lasted the distance.

"We plan to use the ball in other MCC matches, University matches and county second-team games. And if we find a ball which works then it could even be used in the longer format."
