Wigan chairman insists Steve Bruce is in line to take Sir Alex Ferguson's job at Manchester United

Dave Whelan believes Sir Alex Ferguson's reign at Manchester United may be nearing an end and that his Wigan manager Steve Bruce is one of the leading candidates to replace him.

As Wigan braced themselves for a massive security operation ahead of Sunday's showdown with Ferguson's champions-elect, chairman Whelan spelled out his fears that Bruce may be high on United's wanted list.

Lined up: Steve Bruce in the running for United job

He said: 'I wondered how Steve was going to pull us round, the way we were playing when he arrived, but he has proved himself the most important guy in the whole club.

Another European title and Fergie may decide he's had enough. If United come in for Steve, I couldn't contemplate standing in his way.'

Barclays Premier League chiefs have helped fund extra policing to try and guard against trouble marring United's final push for the title.

Whelan fears as many as 20,000 will be locked out and that hundreds of United fans will be among the home support after buying tickets on the black market for £450.

Police numbers have been doubled as a result, with the Premier League agreeing to foot half the overall bill of around £34,000.

A spokesman claimed it was normal practice whenever a trophy presentation was planned. While a replica will be on hand at Stamford Bridge in case Chelsea, playing Bolton, capitalise on any United slipup, the genuine article will be at the JJB Stadium.

Whelan insisted extra security would have been needed anyway, after an unprecedented demand which led to some Wigan fans cashing in and using the money to buy season tickets for only £250.

He said: 'Tickets are going for £450 on eBay and there could be 20,000 outside the ground. We'll be swamped.'
