Wilkinson loses his mentor

Jonny Wilkinson's future at Newcastle was plunged into doubt last night after his long-term mentor, fitness coach Steve Black, left the club.

The charismatic Geordie's departure was shrouded in mystery as an official statement merely claimed that the Falcons and Black had 'parted company'.

Black Is the man who guided England's fly half through his frequent injury comebacks since the 2003 World Cup.

A former nightclub bouncer, occasional script-writer and team-building guru, he has also worked with Newcastle United, Sunderland and Fulham football clubs, the Wales rugby team and the British Lions.

Meanwhile, Wilkinson has backed Brian Ashton's bid to stay on as England head coach.

With the RFU set to make an announcement next week following a post-World Cup review, Wilkinson said: "I am a great fan of Brian. He can release players into being fully ambitious and daring to go out and play as opposed to fearing failure."

Ashton is clear about his own intentions, adding: "I want to continue. I want to win the 2011 World Cup because we've got players coming through who are capable of doing that."

Gloucester full-back Olly Morgan's hopes of earning an England recall during the Six Nations are in jeopardy, with his club sending him to see a specialist in London this week to assess the extent of his latest shoulder injury.
