Will Lewis title be tarnished?

Ron Dennis has reopened McLaren's defence in the Formula One spying row by claiming that Lewis Hamilton's potential world title would be tarnished if they are not cleared of all wrong-doing.

The FIA's court of appeal will meet in Paris on September 13 to decide McLaren's fate after their chief designer, Mike Coughlan, was found in possession of 780 pages of Ferrari's technical data.

Dennis, whose team lead the drivers' and constructors' championships with five races left, said: 'We are in F1 to win. But the most important thing is not just winning — it is how we win.

'I don't know what twists and turns are going to take place at the appeal. If we do not come out of that with an unblemished reputation then the results of this season will be tarnished.

'I know the truth and the truth is that McLaren as a company are not involved in this matter.'

McLaren were found guilty of 'fraudulent' behaviour in July under a regulation which states that teams are responsible for their employees' actions. However, they escaped a penalty because there was no proof they had benefited from Coughlan's dossier.

There remains the danger that the appeal, conducted by leading lawyers, could even derail McLaren's hopes of winning both world titles.

Hamilton's lead over his team-mate Fernando Alonso was cut to five points after his front right tyre blew at 190mph in Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix, with the Ferrari duo of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen 15 and 16 points off the summit respectively.

In the constructors' championship, there are just 11 points separating the bitter rivals. That could also change at another appeal hearing on September 19 into the points which were erased at the Hungarian Grand Prix over the Hamilton-Alonso qualifying row.
