WIMBLEDON DAY ONE - All the action as it happened from SW19

Wimbledon starts with British success for a change, with Elena Baltacha beating Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Defending men's champion Roger Federer saw off Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty, while women's No1 Ana Ivanovic eased past Rossana de los Rios. Follow the action with Sportsmail. . .

20:40 Seventh seed David Nalbandian crashes out, losing in straight sets to Canada's Frank Dancevic, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

20:30 - BRIT WATCH: Melanie South, loses her first round women's singles match against number 28 seed Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-3 6-7 (1/7) 6-4.

20:00 - No 5 seed David Ferrer, of Spain, wins first round men's singles match against Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky after his opponent retires. Ferrer was leading 7-6 (8/6) 6-3 1-3.

19:50 - BRIT WATCH: South has hit back, winning the second set tie-break 7/1 to take the match to a deciding set.

19:10 - BRIT WATCH: Melanie South, Britain's No 3 women's player, is struggling against her first-round opponent Alona Bondarenko. The Russian won the first set 6-3 and it's going with serve so far in the second.

18:20 - Ana Ivanovic says she is relishing the pressure of being the top seed in the women's singles. After easing past  Paraguay's Rossana De Los Rios 6-1 6-2, the Serb said: 'Coming in as the top seed means lots of people expect you to win. But I see it as a positive thing. If you put yourself in a position to do something memorable then you feel pressure.' Read .

18:15 - DJOKOVIC WINS: The Serb isn't hanging around any longer. After a tricky start, Djokovic beats Germany's Michael Berrer 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

18:00 - Djockovic is back in the zone. The Serb has a 2-1 sets lead against Berrer and is 4-0 up in the fourth.

17:45 - BRIT WATCH: Bogdanovic can't match Baltacha's earlier feat. The British men's No 2 is beaten 7-6 4-6 6-3 7-6 by Italy's Simone Bolelli.

17:40 - Serena Williams says she and her sister Venus will be around for 'a long, long, long time'. After beating Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 7-5 6-3, Serena said: 'We have decades left at Wimbledon. We definitely plan on capitalising.' Read more .

17:35 - No 4 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova has won her first round singles match against Mathilde Johansson of France. The Russian won 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.

17:20 - Roger Federer is clearly happy with his  work on the opening day. 'I played well and was consistent all the way through,' said the Swiss after beating Dominik Hrbaty. Read the full story .

17:13 - Berrer does it, taking the second set in convincing fashion, 6-2 against Australian Open champion Djokovic.

17:08 - Berrer shows his first-set resilience was no fluke. He's broken Djokovic twice in the second set and will serve for the set at 5-2.

16:53 - BRIT WATCH: Bogdanovic fights back in the third set but can't stop Bolelli taking a two-sets-to-one with a 6-3 victory.

16:33 - BRIT WATCH: Bogdanovic has been broken and looks like he's going to lose the third set against Bolelli. He's 4-2 down, with a set each.

16:30 - Germany's Berrer is more than holding his own in the early stages against the much-fancied Serb Djockovic. It's going with serve so far: 4-3 to the third seed.

16:15 - BRIT WATCH: Bogdanovic hits back to win the second set 6-4, levelling his match with Bolelli at one set each.

16:00 - It's another Serb up next on Centre Court as men's World No 3 Novak Djokovic takes on Germany's Michael Berrer.

15:46 - IVANOVIC WINS: The Serb wraps up a straight-forward straight-sets victory against De los Rios: 6-1, 6-2.

15:34 - BRIT WATCH: Alex Bogdanovic's hopes of building on Baltacha's success have taken an early hit. The British No 2 (World No 243) has lost his first set on a tie-break to Italy's Simone Bolelli.

15:30 - Women's World No 1 Ivanovic is already a set up (6-1) and motoring through the second, 3-1 so far.

14:58 - It's hard to believe Centre Court could get even hotter, but the arrival of Ana Ivanovic for her match against Paraguay's Rossana de los Rios has raised a few temperatures.

14:50 - Serena Williams survived a few anxious moments before seeing off the determined challenge of Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 7-5 6-3 over on Court One.

14:32 - FEDERER WINS: The Swiss may never have beaten Dominik Hrbaty before, but he makes light work of the Slovak this time, going through to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

14:13 - BALTACHA WINS! Elena Baltacha gets the Brit Pack off to a great start with victory over Germany's Angelique Kerber. The women's British No 4 won her 1st round match  6-3 2-6 7-5 and will face China's Jie Zheng next. The Chinese beat 30th seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-3.

14:13 - BRIT WATCH: Baltacha concedes two break points but comes back to lead Kerber 6-5 in her final set.

14:10 - BRIT WATCH: Just when Baltacha looks beaten she fights back to 5-5 in her final set against Kerber.

14:05 - Federer takes second set. The Swiss eases to a 2-0 lead in sets, this time 6-2 against Hrbaty.

13:50 - BRIT WATCH: Baltacha has to dig deep. The Scot had her serve broken and Kerber is serving for a 5-3 lead.

13:36 - Federer takes first set. The Swiss wins 6-3 in 24 minutes.

13:35 - BRIT WATCH: Baltacha misses an opportunity to break serve in the final set of her first-round women's singles match against Kerber. 2-2.

13:30 - Federer has never beaten Hrbaty before. Admittedly, they've only met twice, neither time on grass. But the Slovak has a 2-0 record.

13:27 - BRIT WATCH: Elena Baltacha has gone to a final set with Germany's Angelique Kerber after taking the first set. She's 1-0 up with serve so far.

13:23 - It's relatively easy so far for Federer. He's already broken his opponent's serve and leads 4-1.

13:12 - They're off and Federer eases in to win the first game off his serve.

13:00 - Roger Federer and Dominik Hrbaty arrive at a packed centre court.
