Sam Querrey makes it through as opponent retires
22 June 2010
Number 18 seed and US hope Sam Querrey rapidly overwhelmed Sergiy Stakhovsky with his big hiiting after the Ukrainian retired due to ill health in the third set trailing 7-6, 6-3 and 2-1.
Stakhovsky slipped over twice in the match and first called a trainer and then a doctor who ruled that he was unable to continue in the sweltering heat of Court 18 at lunchtime.
Although the first set went to a tie-break Querrey's power round the court against his far slighter opponent proved too much. The second set was pocketed with more ease by the American, who also unfurled some deft drop shots, and was surely on course to win in straight sets.
At 6ft6 Querrey is currently ranked number 21 in the world and could upset a big name this year after winning at Queen's Club. He looks a good outside bet for American glory lurking dangerously in the bottom half of the draw.
Querrey has an excellent serve and volley game that overwhelmed his Ukrainian opponent. Although the Californian has declared hard courts to be his favourite surface he clearly is developing a fondness for grass.
He began playing tennis at the age of four and has so far never made it through to the second week of Wimbledon. That could all be about to change this year.
Querrey has already won his third title of the year all different surfaces – he won in Memphis on hardcourt and in Belgrade on clay, before his win over fellow American Mardy Fish at Queen's. A dark horse on red hot form.
