Stop whingeing and focus on winning

My message to Andy Murray is simple: if you want to win Wimbledon, stop moaning!

It is disappointing to me that after such a dramatic five-set victory as Monday's win over Stanislas Wawrinka he decided to focus on his difficulties over playing under the Centre Court roof.

We all know Andy just isn't the type of character to break into dance after winning a match but he shouldn't talk about things he can't control because it is a waste of energy.

His progress has been pretty smooth considering all the things that could have gone wrong so he should be happier about what he has achieved so far.Maybe he has to learn to be a little bit cooler, play things down and hopefully he isn't going to talk about these concerns again. When things don't go the way you want them to, people always look for excuses. Andy needs to remember that if they had not closed the roof, the match would have been stopped and I am sure that nobody would have wanted to come back the next day. And imagine the stick the tournament officials would have taken!

If he wants to win the tournament, he has to deal with all the problems that come around and that includes Roger Federer always playing earlier than him. Does two hours putting your feet up make any difference? I don't think so and I doubt Roger will worry either. Andy had a day off yesterday so there are no excuses if he is not physically prepared to play Juan Carlos Ferrero (left) today. These top players are trained athletes and they don't need that long to recover, especially given the giant strides Andy has made in his physical fitness.

I just don't like the discussion about whether it is good to play a longer match or not. Had Andy won in straight sets, there would be people complaining that he wasn't tested enough.

There might be a mental hangover because it was an emotional match but that's what his team are there for and Andy can handle that side of things.

People put way too much emphasis on this idea of 'hype'. Far too many people are speculating on what he might be thinking but tennis matches are simple from that point of view.

The goal every time you go on court is to play well, win easily and go home. Reality is not like that and finding a way to win is the sign of a champion. Andy did that against Stan but he will have to raise his game. He didn't serve well but against Ernests Gulbis, he served like a maniac - you can't always do it. All that counts is he came through.

Wawrinka just hit Andy off the court in the first set and the only criticism I have of his game is that he needs to be more aggressive. Ferrero doesn't hit the ball anywhere near as hard as Wawrinka does. Because he is so good at chasing balls down from behind the baseline he just thinks sometimes he can put the ball in play and wait for the other guy to make an error. That just isn't enough to win a grand slam. If I were in Andy's camp, I would be telling him he has to go out there and try to win the match and not wait for the other guy to lose it.

Sometimes it is a question of confidence and I felt at times against Wawrinka, Andy didn't feel free enough to play his shots and tried to minimise his mistakes.

He also didn't use the drop shot very often which is a 'confidence shot' - deadly when used right but suicidal if not. Ferrero used to be scared of grass like a lot of Spaniards and he needed a wildcard to get into the tournament here but he is a former world No1 and French Open champion.

Everything is good in his game but there is no weapon Andy has to fear like Wawrinka's backhand.

So, if Andy plays his regular tennis and serves well today, then Ferrero is not going to hurt him.

Big champions adapt to different challenges and I think Andy still has to prove he can do that consistently on the biggest stage of all.
