Wing Wood puts Wakefield in their place

It is that time of the season in the Cups with the potential for big upsets, so QEGS, Wakefield travelled with some trepidation across to the east coast to face South Hunsley.

The home side caused shockwaves by putting out Hymer's from Hull in the last round and had a flying start against QEGS, scoring a converted try in the first five minutes.

But QEGS, boasting many of their Under 15 side who reached the 2006 final, kept their heads and went on to win 52-7 with two tries for powerful wing James Wood. KCS Wimbledon reached the quarter-finals last season. The team this year retain only two starters — skipper Guy Tyler and prop Charlie Ellis — and results have been good, including this week's 52-10 third round defeat of Latymer Upper.

However, KCS coach Marcus Blackburn knows much more is needed if they are to emulate last season.

They have lost twice this campaign, to St Benedict's, one of the Cup favourites, and narrowly to St Paul's — who they face at home in the fourth round.

Omens for the U18 Cup? Unbeaten John Cleveland are on the march again after a 45-11 defeat of Bishop Vesey's; The Chase from Malvern are in new territory after another great win, 6-5 over King's Worcester; Lymm's were beaten 13-0 at home to St Ambrose, who were unlucky in last season's quarter-finals; Wilmslow won 59-3 at Stockport Grammar, with the Kennedy brothers in fine form.

Omens for the World Cup Final? Hutton Grammar, where Brian Ashton coached and Steve Borthwick played, beat Arnold 17-0; John Fisher, where Paul Sackey learned his rugby, trounced Skinners 46-10.
