Winter is handed new Watford role

Watford have moved quickly to replace Chief Executive Mark Ashton by appointing Julian Winter to the role.

Ashton quit last night and the club confirmed the promotion of deputy CEO Winter today.

Watford's Annual General Meeting takes place on Monday and, with more boardroom changes imminent, it is not clear whether Winter's appointment is for the long term.

Ashton's exit, as predicted in Standard Sport yesterday, paves the way for ex-directors Jimmy and Vince Russo to be re-elected to the board.

Jimmy Russo is keen to replace interim chairman Andy Wilson, an associate of largest shareholder Lord Michael Ashcroft, who does not want the job long-term. Lord Ashcroft has a 37 per cent holding, which he is thought to wish to sell.

The plan is that by New Year a five-man board will be in place, whose first task will be to bring in at least £5million fresh investment.
