Wise and Terry should be prepared to take as good as they give, says Poll

Zero tolerance to foul language may be the only answer following Dennis Wise's complaint that he was sworn at by Danny McDermid after abusing the referee.

The FA are duty bound to investigate any allegations of misconduct. So the news that Leeds manager Wise and the referee are both being investigated should not raise too many eyebrows, even when you take into account the personnel involved.

Wise move: referee McDermid gets an escort at Gillingham

Wise was a character as a player, a loveable rogue who, despite his excesses, was easy to warm to and his managerial style certainly appears successful this season.

Dennis lives by the principle that you should give as good as you get and only dish it out if you can take it back.

But no matter how badly Wise felt that McDermid performed in Leeds' draw with Gillingham last Saturday, he should have kept his comments to himself.

Now each has reported the other for swearing, which seems like a playground tit-for-tat spat.

Foul language is no longer an offence unless it is offensive, insulting or obscene.

Wise has allegedly claimed that McDermid told him to f*** off.

I don't want to belittle this but I never saw Wise as the shrinking violet likely to be offended so easily.

Apparently, there were five witnesses to support Wise's claim and if McDermid did swear at him then he deserves to be punished. Whatever the provocation there can be no excuses for using foul language.

Last year I was falsely accused and subsequently cleared of swearing at John Terry. Later in the season Phil Dowd was accused of abusing Wigan players. Now the suddenly puritanical Wise puts his head above the parapet!

Referees should not lower their standards, despite immense provocation. This unhealthy trend should lead to referees drawing a line under the foul language debate.

So, be offended when a player swears on the field of play and send him off. Be insulted any time a manager swears in the technical area and dismiss him. Both actions would be correct, according to the laws.

Strong measures, but if Wise, Terry and Co want to raise the bar in moral standards they should be prepared to take as good as they give!
