Wise calls up old boss Bassett to help Leeds

Leeds manager Dennis Wise has gone back to his Crazy Gang days at Wimbledon to recruit his former boss Dave Bassett as his new assistant at Elland Road.

Wise lost Gus Poyet to Spurs this week and immediately phoned Bassett, 63, to ask if he would lend his experience of 25 years in management to the Yorkshire club's cause in League One after their remarkable run of 11 wins and two draws following a 15-point penalty to start the campaign.

Bassett has agreed to take on the role until the end of the season and will join up with the team tomorrow ahead of Saturday's trip to leaders Carlisle.

Bassett signed Wise as an 18-year-old for Wimbledon in 1985 and the two have remained close ever since.

The former Crystal Palace, Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest, Barnsley and Leicester manager briefly helped Wise out at Millwall three seasons ago.

Lincoln last night appointed former Huddersfield boss Peter Jackson as their new manager with a contract until 2009.

The struggling League Two side preferred Jackson to former Leicester and Aston Villa manager Brian Little who had also been short-listed.

New QPR manager Luigi De Canio has added fellow Italians Iuri Bartoli and Paolo Pavesi to his coaching team at Loftus Road.
