Wise slams his 'brain dead' Leeds players after shock Elland Road FA Cup exit

Dennis Wise blasted his 'brain dead' cup flops after they were dumped out by minnows Hereford.

Winger Lionel Ainsworth, 20, scored the only goal after just three minutes at Elland Road in a thrilling FA Cup first-round replay.

The former Derby man struck a low shot from 18 yards past keeper Casper Ankergren after Trevor Benjamin's lay off.

"We've played well in the league all season but not looked anything like as good in the cup.

"I thought my players were a bit brain dead. I couldn't say that one of them played well.

"We didn't pass the ball, we didn't play our football and we made wrong decisions in all areas of the pitch."

The League Two side fully deserved this sensational win which earns them a home tie against League One Hartlepool.

Leeds have now not won an FA Cup tie since February 2003.

And given the League One side's dramatic fall from grace over the past four years this Hereford triumph may not be as glorious as the famous victory over Newcastle 35 years ago.

But it was still a notable scalp for boss Graham Turner's mighty minnows and he was rightly proud of his team.

He said: "Leeds might have fallen on hard times but they are still a very big club and in my book are certainties to win promotion this season.

"So we believe they are still a big cup scalp for us. We deserved our win. We competed well and played well."

This was only the Yorkshire outfit's fourth defeat in all competitions this season — and the victory margin could have been much greater.

After 12 minutes Theo Robinson's shot was hacked off the line by Paul Huntington.

Ainsworth released Robinson again on 23 minutes but the striker hoisted his drive over.

Leeds tried desperately to get back into the game after the break. Jermaine Beckford, Jonny Howson and Leon Constantine all went close but Hereford held on.
