Witter banking on stylish win to earn a crack at Hatton

Junior Witter will not change his boxing style for tonight's WBC light-welterweight title defence against Vivian Harris as he targets a fight against long-term rival Ricky Hatton.

While unbeaten Hatton is set for a £5million purse from his Las Vegas fight with Floyd Mayweather on December 8, Witter is defending the most prestigious world title for a tiny fraction of that sum five minutes from his Doncaster home.

Harris, the former WBA champion, is a tough opponent for Witter's second defence after a series of unspectacular performances from the Yorkshire boxer, who relies on a switch-hitting style.

But a stunning display could convince Hatton to share a ring with him. Witter, 33, said: "I don't resent Ricky fighting Mayweather in Las Vegas.

"His team have done well and good luck to him. It's just a shame I'm not going to be the first person to beat Ricky, because I think it is a shut-out victory for Mayweather.

"Ricky has got great heart, but I don't see him doing anything and I think he will retire after that fight.

"It's frustrating we are not fighting, but life is not always fair. You have to be in the right place at the right time, like Ricky." Harris admits his career hinges on victory tonight. He said: "Witter will have to kill me to beat me. He fights a bit like a coward, but I have faced more awkward people."
