Wolves bare their teeth at last as Collins steals the points

Neill Collins spared Wolves' blushes as Mick McCarthy's side came back from a goal down to beat Scunthorpe at Molineux.

An 83rd-minute headed goal by full-back Collins from a cross by Matt Jarvis was greeted with joy on the pitch and the terraces as it took the Midlands club to within a point of a play-off place with another home game against QPR at the weekend.

The Butler did it: Scunthorpe take an early lead

Wolves made an inauspicious start to the game, conceding a goal after five minutes from a set-piece.

Centre-back Darren Ward complained he was held down by Andy Butler as he conceded a corner during an early Scunthorpe attack.

His protest fell on the deaf ears of referee Mark Haywood and his fury was compounded when Butler then rose high at the far post to head in a poorly defended cross from the right by Grant McCann.

A goal down, Wolves then failed to impress in their bid to extricate themselves from their self-imposed handicap, being either too predictable or overelaborate, although Andy Keogh and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake had chances to equalise.

In the 31st minute, winger Michael Gray seemed certain to score, only for his close-range shot to hit team-mate Ebanks-Blake and bounce to safety.

Wolves' confidence was waning and Ebanks-Blake's miss on 40 minutes when clean through did little to help.

Wolves were level after the break when Gray unleashed a 57th minute volley when the visiting defence failed to properly clear a free kick from the left and the shot deflected into an unguarded net.

It put the home side - who had only one one of their last seven home games - back in contention.

But Wolves pressed for the vital three points and Collins sealed victory to leave Scunthorpe staring an almost inevitable relegation in the face.
