Wood in no rush to blow it like Rose

Chris Wood will not copy the mistake made by Justin Rose a decade ago of turning professional immediately after amateur success at The Open.

When the Championship last visited Royal Birkdale in 1998 Rose chose to cash in on his fourth place, earned with an amazing chip in at the last hole, only for the decision to backfire as he missed 21 successive cuts.

Wood, 20, who yesterday finished top amateur in a share of fifth place with former US Open champion Jim Furyk, insisted he would consider his options.

The 6ft 5ins former Bristol City academy footballer, who chipped in Rose-like at the 18th hole in the first round, revealed: "I've no plans to turn pro yet. I'm going to take the week off and then I'll play the English Amateur Championship at the end of the month."
