Woodgate lets rip at sorry Spurs

Jonathan Woodgate has launched an astonishing attack on his Tottenham team-mates by claiming they needed 'a kick up the arse' following their 4-1 defeat against Newcastle on Sunday.

Sportsmail can also reveal that Tottenham assistant manager Gus Poyet lost his temper with the under-achievers at the end of Sunday's game and was involved in heated arguments with some of the players in the dressing room.

Poyet's criticism came after Juande Ramos admitted that Spurs were lacking motivation and warned his under-achievers that he is prepared to sell them in the summer.

Woodgate said: "We need to go to Blackburn on Saturday and win — not draw. They are going for Europe and fighting on that front.

"I wish we were going for Europe because maybe that would give a few of the lads a kick up the arse. We need to be professional and work as hard as we can.

"The defeat at Manchester City was supposed to be a kick up the backside, but we obviously haven't learnt. We're not happy in the dressing room and we're not going to be happy.

"We all know when we're not playing well. I'm sure a few words will be said in training when we analyse the performance. It wasn't good enough. I wouldn't have stayed and watched this. I've no problem with the fans leaving early because I would have left as well."

Woodgate claimed he signed for Spurs in the January transfer window because they had 'a top manager', but their season has tailed off after their success in the Carling Cup.

They lost to PSV Eindhoven on penalties in the UEFA Cup and they remain mid-table in the Premier League following their 4-1 hammering at home to Newcastle.

Woodgate added: "Just because we can't get relegated and can't really go any further forward doesn't mean we can put in performances like that. We still have to perform week in, week out or the manager will make changes.

"At the end of the day we're all playing for our places in the team, no matter how long you are under contract, when you were bought and how long you've been at the club.

"The manager will make changes, no problem. He'll defend you as your manager but he'll make changes to suit the club.

"No-one is ever safe in football — apart from Ronaldo."
