Woods is happy with her bronze in re-run

Shelly Woods ended a difficult week where she began it - on the podium - and the wheelchair racer is now hoping to go for gold at the Paralympic Games.

The 22-year-old 2007 London Marathon champion from Blackpool finished second in the women's T54 5,000 metres on day two in Beijing but officials ordered the medals be returned and the race be re-run after six athletes were involved in a penultimate-lap crash.

In a tactical second race today, Woods had to settle for bronze, finishing behind American winner Amanda McGrory and Canada's Diane Roy, who won the original race.

"I'm ecstatic with bronze," said Woods, who punched the air after crossing the line.

"It's my favourite event and probably one of my strongest and to win a bronze medal is a dream come true.

"The first time being up on that podium with silver was amazing, but this one, no one can take it away from me.

"I really earned this one and I beat the girls when they were at their best. I'm really, really happy and just so glad it's over.

"I got through it and did myself justice on the track."

The week has been a trial for Woods after having to return the silver and deal with the British and Canadian teams' review of procedures, but she was thrilled to have come through it unscathed.

"There was nothing I could do about it. The only thing I could do is go out there and race and try and win another medal," she added.

"I was really happy with the race and how it went. It's brilliant."

Woods revealed she dealt with the ordeal with the best possible medicine - laughter.

She watched replays of the first race and was amused by a moment which followed the crash.

"The guy who rang the bell on the last lap, he broke the bell - it came off in his hand," she said. "Everytime I think about the crash I just remember that guy breaking the bell and it just tickles me to think about it."

Woods competes in the women's T54 800m semi-final tomorrow before taking part in the 1,500m on Monday and Tuesday and the marathon on Wednesday.
