Woolmer was sounded out over replacing Fletcher

Bob Woolmer had talks before the World Cup with a high-ranking England official about succeeding Duncan Fletcher at the end of the tournament.

In the week before his death on March 18 at the Pegasus Hotel in Jamaica, Woolmer — then Pakistan coach — revealed to a confidant that Dennis Amiss, the chairman of ECB's International Teams Management Group and a member of the management committee responsible for appointing the England coach, had contacted him to find out if he was interested in replacing Fletcher should the 58-year-old Zimbabwean quit.

Job query: Bob Woolmer had talks with England's top men

The claim appears to contradict statements made this week by ECB chairman David Morgan, who insisted no one had been approached officially prior to Fletcher finalising his position here in Barbados on Wednesday.

Fletcher first told the England and Wales Cricket Board of his desire to resign on April 10.

The alleged approach to Woolmer predates by almost a month the day on which ECB Director of Cricket John Carr claims Fletcher first told him of his plans to retire from the job at the end of the tournament.

According to the contact, who wishes to remain anonymous, Woolmer said: "I was asked if I was interested in the job. I was told there was a lot of money in the pot, more than double my salary with Pakistan. I wasn't actually offered anything, but I was sounded out.

"I wouldn't have done it just for the money. I indicated that I didn't wish to carry on as an international coach, but that I would favour a consultancy role. Although I have confidence in my ability to coach, I'd rather be involved on just a consultancy basis."

Amiss, one of the most influential voices within English cricket, had a close working relationship with Woolmer when the pair were chief executive and coach of Warwickshire in the 1990s.

When asked, Amiss would not enlarge on the matter, saying: "I don't know anything about that, I can't help you."
