Woosnam: If the players want me, I'll be Ryder Cup captain for a second time
23 September 2008
Ian Woosnam wants to be Ryder Cup captain for a second time when Wales hosts the competition in 2010.
Woosie led Europe to a record-equalling 18½-9½ romp two years ago in Ireland and is regarded as the ideal man to try to restore pride after the 16½-11½ rout by the US at Valhalla.
He told The Sun: 'If the players want me back I would be delighted to do it. It is one of the greatest honours a golfer can get.'
The next Ryder Cup will be staged at Celtic Manor and Woosnam acts as a travelling ambassador for the £150m resort.
He added: 'I’ve already had my turn and don’t want to put anyone else’s nose out. But as I’ve always said you have got to put your name forward if you want it.'
The captain will be chosen by the European Tour players in January and Woosnam’s main rivals are likely to be Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Irishman Paul McGinley.
But Celtic Manor’s billionaire owner Sir Terry Matthews is pushing hard for Woosnam to return.
Matthews and the rest of the Welsh contingent are furious at Faldo, who put his foot in his mouth yet again at the closing ceremony in Valhalla.
He rounded off his speech by declaring: 'We’ll see you all in Wales in 2010 — and don’t forget to pack your waterproofs.'
The Welsh Tourist Board and Ryder Cup Wales have spent millions promoting the event and were horrified at Faldo’s suggestion that it never stops raining.
Celtic Manor marketing chief Paul Williams blasted: 'His comments are not the sort of message that we want to send out to the world about Wales.'
