World-class Asha grabs stunning gold
12 July 2007
Philip and silver medallist Rosangela Santos of Brazil were given the same time, right down to the nearest thousandth of a second at 11.459.
Scroll down to read more:
Initially it appeared that two gold medals would be awarded after the stadium scoreboard displayed both athletes in first place with 11.46sec.
But using the most up-to-date computerised methods, the judges awarded Philip the victory by a single pixel from the high-definition photo-finish image.
Philip's team-mate Ashlee Nelson made it a double celebration for the Norwich Union GB team, claiming the bronze medal in 11.58.
Philip kept her nerve after two false starts from her rivals, making the best start and appearing to have the race tied up.
But she slowed dramatically in the in the last 10 metres, allowing Santos to get alongside.
The Briton, also an international gymnast, explained: "I wasn't aware of the Brazilian girl until about five metres out and I thought 'oh no".
"I think it's the first time I have actually dipped properly.
"It's one of those stepping stones I've jumped and hopefully there will be many more."
