Wrexham v Aston Villa: Carey in O'Neill tribute

27 August 2007
Carey played under the Irishman at Leicester in the 1990s and has taken advice from O'Neill since taking over at the Racecourse Ground in January.
Carey said: 'I bumped into him when I'd just taken the job and he told me to give it a go and give it my best shot. He was very encouraging.
'He was a great guy to play for and he's a great bloke. The fact that he's been that successful doesn't surprise me because he always got the best out of his players. He's a very clever man and it doesn't surprise me that he's gone from strength to strength.
'Aston Villa are massive favourites, and rightly so, but we just want to do ourselves justice on our home ground and make sure they go back knowing that they've been in a game.'
O'Neill is unsurprised that Carey has himself been a success as a manager after he worked wonders in keeping Wrexham in the Football League at the end of last season.
O'Neill said: 'His general overview of football was worth listening to. He talked a lot of sense on football. He had an insight into how a manager was feeling, trying to win games and being under pressure to do so. Brian asked pretty relevant questions at the time.'
