Yakubu bids for redemption
14 February 2008
Yakubu is ready to repay his debt to a Everton team-mates and manager by helping the club reach a major European final for the first time in 23 years.
The relieved Nigeria striker, fined £80,000 and dropped by David Moyes for going AWOL after the Africa Cup of Nations, is desperate to put the row behind him as Everton step up their UEFA Cup chase.
Yakubu: Wants to get back in manager's good books
Yakubu returned to lead the line in a resolute 2-0 win over Norwegian champions Brann in Bergen on Wednesday night that puts the 1985 Cup-winners' Cup-holders on the brink of a place in the last 16.
But it will be a long time before Yakubu forgets the moment he walked into the full blast of Moyes' fury as anxious team-mates feared the £12million forward would be on his way out of Goodison.
Yakubu admitted: "It was bad, and the gaffer was very angry. I have to thank the players, because they were behind me. They gave me support. I apologised to them and I'm so pleased it is all over.
"It was just personal reasons why I never turned up, but I have spoken to the manager and now it is over.
"It's good to be in a team where you know the players want you and they make you feel important."
Leon Osman and Victor Anichebe scored the goals which could well have sealed the tie.
Lagos-born Anichebe, who is not 20 until April, could yet be the long-term successor in the Nigeria line-up to Yakubu, who said: "Victor's doing great. You see in training that he's getting better. He can be the Premier League's top scorer one day."
