Yallop: Beckham's learning all the time

Los Angeles Galaxy boss Frank Yallop believes David Beckham's watching brief against Chivas Guadalajara last night represents a big step forward in the England star's adjustment to life in American soccer.

Injured Beckham is still waiting for his first start for the Galaxy since joining the Major League Soccer team on a five-year contract earlier this month.

Having made his debut as a 78th minute substitute on July 21 in a friendly against Chelsea, the ankle injury he suffered on England duty against Estonia on June 6 has kept him out of two matches since in the inaugural SuperLiga competition between US and Mexican teams.

Beckham watched Tuesday's night's victory over Mexican champions CF Pachuca from the comfort of an executive box at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, but last night at the Los Angeles Coliseum, he took a much more involved approach.

The former England captain was present during Yallop's dressing room team talk before the game, watched the game "close in" from the Galaxy bench, according to the coach and even followed his new boss across the pitch at full time to remonstrate with match referee Courtney Campbell as Chivas recorded a 2-1 win in front of 37,337 mostly Chivas fans.

"He definitely wanted to come to the game and be on the bench and be involved in the dressing room so that's obviously very important to us," Yallop said.

"So this was a good learning experience to get him used to the players, when they're getting ready for matches, how they react, and all that sort of thing.

"So when it comes along he won't be surprised about how we prepare for games, my team talks and half-time talks as well. He'll know how we operate.

"We're just desperate to get him on the field. The fans, the players and everyone at the club, want him to be healthy and ready to step on the field.

"He's anxious to do that."

And once Beckham recovers from his left ankle problems and begins training with his new team-mates, Yallop expects the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder to carve out a leadership role within the team.

"Abel Xavier has taken it on himself to really talk to the back four and worked out with our defenders what the best system is and how we keep out the opposition," Yallop said.

"I'm sure David will do the same type of thing with his midfield players and probably the front players too.

"Obviously it's good having him around. It's a boost for morale for the team because he's right behind us and he always has been from day one to be honest. And I felt it was good if he got a bit of the atmosphere tonight. And I think at the end there he saw a bit of fight and that was important."

Galaxy were not without their chances in front of goal against Chivas with striker Carlos Pavon still to open his scoring account since signing last month.

"We're just looking for Carlos to get off the mark and get that first goal for us," Yallop said.

Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan said of Honduran striker Pavon: "He's getting the passes, I think, he feels that and I think he knows he should have scored a couple tonight.

"That's what he's good at, scoring. He's not a guy that you're not going to see on the ball all the time, playmaking and stuff like that.

"But I know he's frustrated, he wants to score."
