You stirrers! United accused of whipping up Roma violence

Roma have reopened the wounds of last season's bitter Champions League quarter-final by claiming Manchester United players deliberately whipped up a hostile atmosphere ahead of the second leg.

The Italian side fly into Manchester tonight for tomorrow's group game, just six months after crowd violence marred their two previous meetings.

Battling: Christiano Ronaldo has a shot on goal against Roma

Roma's Francesco Totti has sent a female United fan, injured in clashes with Italian police, a video message apologising for the violence that erupted in the Olympic Stadium. But, it seems, not all his teammates are in such charitable mood.

Defender Christian Panucci said his team-mates want revenge for the 7-1 Old Trafford defeat that humiliated the Italians after they had triumphed 2-1 in Rome. He said: "The first match generated so much controversy and United then profited from these circumstances by doing all they could to create a totally unjust atmosphere against us.

"United deserved to win, but some of their players abused this superiority. We see this as an opportunity to exact revenge. I have never suffered on the field like I did that day last season."

There were two stabbings on Saturday night after Roma lost 4-1 at home to Inter Milan and many United fans have pledged not to travel to the Eternal City for their game there on December 12.

But 23-year-old Carly Lyes, who was caught on video being attacked by Italian police in April, will make the trip after a personal invite and an apology from Totti.

"We would like to invite you to the Olympic Stadium and treat you as our guest," said the Italy forward.

United will tomorrow be without first-choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who has a toe injury. Tomasz Kuszczak deputises.
