You're too trembly at Wembley: Capello frustrated by first-night nerves but stands firm on Becks
06 February 2008
Capello, who left Michael Owen fretting on the bench for the whole 90 minutes, believes the players have yet to shake off their calamitous failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

Happy slapper: Jermaine Jenas, scorer of England's first goal, is congratulated by Fabio Capello
England won through goals from Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips, but the new manager was unrepentant after supporters chanted for David Beckham's reinstatment only 20 minutes into the game.
Capello, who made eight changes to the team that lost 3-2 to Croatia at Wembley in England's final Euro 2008 qualifier, said: 'We were nervous at the start. 'We were worried and the failure to qualify for Euro 2008 is still in the back of our minds. Wembley always generates pressure and they didn't play as well as they wished at first.
'It was different when we started to create chances and the Swiss had a very good goalkeeper. I am pleased with the way we didn't give them many chances. Winning is always good for morale.

'I believe I can rotate players to a certain extent but I need to understand and get to know the players. There are matches when everything goes to plan. There are also times when things don't and that is when we find out the character of the team.'
Most of the 87,000 crowd respected the silence for the 23 victims of the Munich air disaster and once the game began expectation had reached fever pitch. But with England seeming uncertain and disjointed in the opening stages, some fans began to chant Beckham's name and call for his return.

Owen at least made the bench but stayed there throughout last night's friendly and Capello insists he will have to prove himself all over again, despite having scored 40 goals in 88 appearances for his country.
There was no way back for the Newcastle striker after he failed to force his way into Capello's experimental 4-3-3 formation.
The Italian said: 'I'm pleased to have won the game and some players impressed me greatly. I'm happy for the fans to chant Beckham's name. I know him very well but the things I do have nothing to do with my feelings for the player. What I do is best for the team.'
The manager added: 'If people perform the way I want, they will stay on the pitch. If they are struggling I will take them off. According to what I see on the pitch, I decide who to bring on and who to take off. For me, all players are equal.
Jenas celebrates opening the scoring for England
'I believe in order to play for England you need to be a great player but you need to play well. Not everyone can play for their country so I think at first, players need to have the right qualities. They need to be fit and in good form.'
Skipper Steven Gerrard was among those to impress in an improved second half during which the crowd began to warm to the new regime. But the midfielder admitted there is room for improvement before the World Cup qualification campaign begins in September.

He said: 'We're happy but we know we can play a lot better. There's still a long way to go. He wants us to be difficult to beat and exciting going forward. It's going to take time but there's a long way to go until the World Cup qualifiers. I'm sure we will be better by then.'
Wayne Rooney, who also impressed alongside Jenas and Joe Cole, said: 'We adapted quite well to the system considering we only worked on it for two to three days. This is a good platform for us.'
