10-man United sink Spurs

Manchester United were behind after a minute and reduced to 10 men but still managed a 3-1 victory in a pulsating clash at White Hart Lane that ended Tottenham's 100% start to the Barclays Premier League season.

Jermain Defoe's acrobatic strike opened the scoring but United have a history of comebacks against Spurs - 5-2 last season and 5-3 eight years ago - and they levelled through Ryan Giggs' free-kick.

Anderson drilled home before the break and despite playing the last half an hour without Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney sealed victory with a cool finish before the end.

This clash had everything - spectacular goals, off-the-ball incidents, a red card, flying tackles and an intensity only known to the Premier League.

The thrilling opening half sprang to life after Defoe's opener, the 26-year-old claiming his eighth goal in as many games for club and country with a spectacular bicycle kick only 50 seconds in.

This inevitably kick-started United, who created a number of chances before levelling through Giggs' fine curling free-kick from 25 yards.

Both sides continued to carve out opportunities at will before Anderson put United ahead four minutes before the break, drilling into the bottom corner from the edge of the area after Scholes' long-range effort was blocked by Ledley King.

There was the same pace and intensity when play got under way again. Jermaine Jenas curled an effort that Ben Foster tipped around the post before Peter Crouch headed against the crossbar from the resulting corner.

Scholes then received his marching orders just before the hour mark, picking up a second yellow card for a challenge on Tom Huddlestone.

However, Spurs were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage and Rooney added a third with 12 minutes remaining when he raced onto Darren Fletcher's pass and cut inside Alan Hutton before squeezing his finish through Carlo Cudicini's legs.
